‘La La Land’ Trailer: Why This is More Than Just Your Standard Romance

So far we’ve been shown two very similar trailers for this La La Land, the love story of a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress. We’ve seen many a love film in the past which follows a standard form. Boy meets girl, they fall in love and overcome an obstacle preventing them from being together. So, why should La La Land excite us as a truly great film? Perhaps it’s because director Damien Chazelle seems to have reinvented a classic style to make a love story that offers more than the standard romance.

This is a Musical!

This summer we got our first look at two trailers for the film. One of which contains a song performed by lead actor, Ryan Gosling, while the other has a performance from lead actress Emma Stone. This already gives a whole new dynamic on the characters. With a love story, we want to understand what each person is really feeling, and I think we’re going to get great insight into those people through their songs and the music, instead of the usual stereotypes of a ‘ditsy blonde’ and an uncharacteristic ‘tough guy’.

The latest trailer (click the thumbnail above) shows that we’re seeing something quite exciting. The first two trailers gave off a sad vibe and the music was in a minor key. We saw shots of Mia (Stone) looking sadly into a mirror and with (what I hope to be) coffee down her shirt. The shots are slow and this sets the pace of the trailer. I can honestly say I didn’t quite get what this film was about beforehand (which isn’t always a bad thing).

Don’t be put off by the fact this is a love story. #Romance trailers are expected to show off the handsome man and the beautiful woman who totally steals his heart. Shots of the two are repeatedly flashed on the screen until you finally see them kiss. Sound about right? Absolutely, if you’re talking about the likes of Dear Johnand The Lucky One – but there’s something different about La La Land.

The latest trailer sheds a whole new light on La La Land and what it’s all about. We get a great mix of upbeat jazz, a fast paced trailer and dialogue! Not to mention the lack of cheesy lines exchanged between the man and woman we normally put up with in a love film. It even starts off with Mia reading lines for an audition (of which I feel she nails). An actress playing an actress is always interesting, I’m intrigued straight away.

As soon as Mia and Sebastian grab hold of each other and kiss (I know, standard love film… but keep reading) the whole atmosphere changes. One hint of passion makes the trailer run wild and we start to grasp a real idea of what this film is all about.

Classic Gosling

As always, you get a sense that Ryan’s character is cool and somebody you want to be like. Whether he’s the un-named Driver in Drive or the easy going playboy Jerry in Gangster Squad, Ryan can pull off this effortlessly suave character every time.

Sebastian seems more on this scale than you would expect, with a much more sensitive side. We see more of Gosling’s relaxed cool-guy characters rub off in the new trailer for La La Land.

“Maybe it means something”

“I doubt it”

“…Yeah I don’t think so”

As we saw in his last film, The Nice Guys, he can also pull off a comedic role. There are many instances in this new trailer that show we’ll be seeing more of this and that’s what excites me the most. Normally in a love film, the comedy is quite poorly written and executed, whereas what we see in this new trailer comes off quite naturally. Something to watch out for.

Bursting With Quality

“They don’t make films like this anymore”

It’s true. I mean, look how big that quote is. This is a musical! And not a cheesy one. There is a real sense of class about it and from what the trailer shows, the execution is remarkable. This isn’t a standard Hollywood love film, but a true work of art.

I am a great lover of music. Jazz is something I’ve never had much care for but it’s been growing on me recently. Needless to say, after seeing this trailer I’m very excited to get my hands on the soundtrack. It’s music, after all, that excites the emotions and makes a film what it is.

Composer Justin Hurwitz has written a score which has already received three nominations for the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. The detail in the music always reflects that in the visual aspect of a film so if this is anything to go by, I am truly excited. This appears to be a truly original film. I know that there’s nothing original about a love story, but we really don’t see them done like this anymore.

La La Land opens in theaters December 9th (or if you’re in the UK like me, you have to wait until January 13th).
